Big Buddha is one of the most famous landmarks on Koh Samui and one of the island’s true symbols. The massive 12-meter golden Buddha statue stands in the northeast of the island on a small islet connected to Samui by a causeway.

To reach the statue, visitors climb the famous «dragon staircase» of 60 steps. The central section is traditionally reserved for monks, while the climb itself is easy enough for most visitors. Even on the way up, the temple atmosphere and views begin to build the experience.

At the top, you will find not only the Big Buddha itself, but also the full Wat Phra Yai temple complex with smaller Buddha statues, figures from Thai mythology, and elements of Chinese and Indian spiritual traditions. It is both a sightseeing spot and an active place of worship.

Behind the main statue, the viewpoint offers beautiful views over the sea and nearby islands, especially Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. On a clear day, the panorama adds a strong visual highlight to the visit.

At the base of the temple, there is a small street with souvenirs, clothing, and local shops. Across the water, you can also notice sculptural scenes from Thai legends that many visitors miss if they leave too quickly.

Big Buddha is especially symbolic because it is often the very first thing visitors see when arriving by plane — almost like the island itself welcoming you.

Big Buddha is not just another place to tick off your list — it’s where Samui first says hello to you. Walk up slowly, go around the temple, and make sure to check behind the statue — some of the best sea views are waiting there 😄🛕 Sometimes the best part is not in front, but just a little further.
