Hin Ta & Hin Yai, known as the Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks, are one of the most famous natural landmarks on Koh Samui. Located at the southern end of Lamai Beach, they are a stop almost everyone visits while exploring the island.
These rocks became famous because of their unusual shapes — the two formations clearly resemble male and female symbols created by nature itself. This made the place well known, although some people still wonder whether nature did everything alone or if humans helped a little for tourism.
The place is also connected to an old local legend about an elderly couple, Ta Kreng and Yai Riem, who were traveling to ask for a bride for their son. Their boat was caught in a storm, and they were lost at sea. According to the story, they became stones so they could still fulfill their purpose and remain together forever.
Today, it is a lively tourist stop where people come for photos, short walks, and beautiful coastal views. Privacy is rare here — there are usually plenty of visitors throughout the day. Nearby, there is a small market with souvenirs, fruit, and snacks, as well as parking.
If you walk a little further, you can reach a viewpoint on the neighboring rocks and enjoy a wider view over Lamai coastline. Swimming near the rocks is not recommended, as the sea can be rough and the rocky bottom makes it unsafe.
