Wat Khunaram is one of the most unusual and well-known temples on Koh Samui, famous for the preserved body of the monk Luang Pho Daeng. His mummified body remains seated in meditation and is displayed inside the temple for visitors to see.
Luang Pho Daeng was a respected monk and spiritual teacher. According to local tradition, he knew the time of his death in advance and passed away on May 6, 1976, during meditation. His body was preserved as a symbol of discipline, awareness, and a reminder of the impermanence of life.
The mummy is placed in a glass case right near the entrance, making it the first thing visitors notice. For some people it can feel unusual or even shocking, but for Thai people it is primarily a sign of respect and spiritual meaning rather than a tourist attraction.
The temple is located directly along the island’s ring road, which makes it an easy stop for island tours, so it is often busy, especially before noon. Despite the tourist attention, it remains an active temple where local people come to pray and leave offerings.
Wat Khunaram is not just a strange landmark — it offers a different perspective on life, death, and spiritual practice, showing a side of Thai culture that feels very different from a typical Western view.
